The type of people who throw presents back in the giver's face. Tut-tut. |
Fear not, whiners! Apink are back next month with their 5th mini album "Pink Luv" so you can all flock to that and praise Apink for never, ever, ever using sex appeal in their comebacks. Admittedly it doesn't sound too impressive from the teasers, but since "Pink Blossom" was a lovely mini album I'm willing to give this a chance. Alas, they aren't coming back for another 5 days. Whatever will lovers of cute concepts do? Well, to stop you from feeling you need to slate AOA for daring to not stick with their flop band concept, here are the best cute songs in K-pop that aren't complete tripe!
Rules:
1) To prevent the list being full of SNSD's older works, the song needs to have a music video.
2) To prevent the list being full of KARA's Japanese works, the song needs to be released in Korea.
"You & I"(IU)
"You & I" is IU's best selling song, and it's not hard to guess why. Back when IU wasn't a filthy whore who slept with Eunhyuk, she was the sweet and innocent little sister of South Korea. Whilst "You & I" isn't strictly a cute concept it's still utterly adorable and let's face it if all these songs had to be cute concepts then the list would probably have 5 songs.
"Gee" (Girls' Generation)
Yes of course this song is in here. I was tempted not to list it because it's such an obvious choice but it just felt too weird not having it here. SNSD's breakout hit composed by E-Tribe who have yet to produce anything as good as the beautiful "Star Star Star" from SNSD's second album "Oh!". Speaking of which...
Oh! (Girls' Generation)
Since I just didn't feel right including one or the other, SNSD have two songs on this list. "Oh" is notable for improving on "Gee" in every single way but not being anywhere near as successful. Oh well, it was still a massive hit and I'm pretty sure it managed to pass 3 million. I do prefer the Japanese video but again only Korean songs are allowed.
"Would You Stay For Tea?" (Hello Venus)
Earlier this month Hello Venus came back with the painfully average "Sticky Sticky" which flopped at 92 on the Gaon digital charts, by far their lowest they've gotten so far. It's a shame when their other three lead singles managed to get into the top 40, especially when the cavity-inducing "Would You Stay For Tea?" is an excellent song. Whenever I hear this song I feel like I'm about to well up and burst into a rainbow of sweets and confetti, maybe it's just me.
"Hello" (SHINee)
That's right, I really like "Hello". Possibly because it's the first SHINee song I ever heard (a likely factor), but possibly because it's shocking when a boy group releases a cute song that isn't a steaming turd (also a likely factor). I really struggled to find songs by boy groups for this list; it's hard enough to find songs by boy groups that are actually cute, never mind half-decent. Neither the video nor the song are overly cute, but here I'd argue it definitely works to its advantage.
"Starlight Moonlight" (SECRET)
SECRET were right up there in 2011, no doubt because of the fantastic retro-inspired songs they released that year. They could have established themselves as retro queens, and then "Poison" completely changed it and the group have never gone back. A shame.
"Supa Dupa Diva" (Dal Shabet)
Definitely not Dal Shabet's best song, but no one can deny it's super cheesy and super cute. After all, "Supa Dupa Diva" is every K-pop fan's guilty pleasure for a reason!
"Tell Me Tell Me" (Rainbow)
2011 was also the year when Rainbow were at their peak after continuing on the success of "A" with "To Me". Then for some reason they disappeared from Korea, released a rubbish Japanese single and DSP called it a year, instead shoving KARA in everyone's faces. When they returned they had completely changed their image. Fortunately, "Tell Me Tell Me" is a delightful song that's so frilly and flouncey it could float away.
"Beautiful Target" (B1A4)
The only other boy group to make it onto this list, B1A4 are notable for their consistently upbeat singles and silly music videos. "Beautiful Target" stands out in particular for probably having the dorkiest K-pop music video I've ever seen, and the classic line "you joom joom my heart like a locket". They're also the only other boy group to appear on this list so congrats.
"My My" (Apink)
Of course I can't make a list of cutest K-pop songs without including something from Apink. "My My" is the song that got Apink noticed by many as it's reminiscent of songs from older generation girl groups. It's also Apink's best-selling single (though it should be noted K-pop downloads in general have plummeted since 2011 but oh well).
So there you have it, the top 10 cutest K-pop songs that are also half-decent. Now you can watch these songs and reminisce about the times when "K-pop used to be fun and different, now it's way too westernized :/"~~
