S.O.S (Save Our Singers)! #1- Tahiti

"Phone Number"

K-pop is an incredibly competitive music market, with most K-pop fans devoting all their time to only one group and only casually following or outright ignoring all others. This means that as groups all battle it out to gain popularity and money, inevitably a small percentage of groups get all the love whilst others are left to wallow at the bottom, seemingly incapable of gaining traction and a steady fan base. Tahiti is one such group, and after their recent appearance on "Mom Is Watching" I thought they would be the perfect first group to feature on the new series "S.O.S", which will highlight groups who are struggling to make or maintain presence in the industry.

Who?: Tahiti first appeared in a reality show called "Ta-dah! It's TAHITI!" to drum up interest before debuting in July 2012 with the song "Tonight". Since then they've released two mini albums and a total of seven singles, their most recent being "Phone Number" (linked above).

Tahiti's current lineup (L-R): Miso, Jisoo, Ari, Minjae, Jerry.

What went wrong?: Aside from belonging to a label which clearly cannot support the group well enough, Tahiti's revolving door member lineup certainly hasn't helped matters; only three of the original members are left, and five members have already left the group at different times. Whilst "Ta-dah! It's TAHITI!" apparently garnered a fair bit of buzz for the group, all hype was shot down when they released their debut song "Tonight", a terribly uninteresting song with far too much hard auto-tune. By the time they started releasing half-decent songs the damage had been done.

"Tonight"

What can be done?: Unfortunately it's incredibly unlikely that Tahiti can ever make it at thus point, however their TV show appearance may net them a few more fans. Member Jisoo has also been revealed to be cast in new reality show "Secret Weapon, Her" which hopes to show "hidden talents" of underrated girl groups (other cast members include Dahye from nugu queens BESTie, Alice from Hello Venus, and Jei from the flawless Fiestar), so if all goes well there's still hope for the group yet! Stay tuned to see more slagging off nugus unfortunate groups getting the spotlight they deserve in future episodes of S.O.S!
